Understanding topographic maps

Assalamu alaikum.

Eighth (8th) grade Earth and Space Science classes during two weeks, were about learning how to make and understand topographic maps and contour lines.

We had to build an island first using a playdough home recipe. The island had to have 2 peaks and 1 valley.

Then we added 1cm of water and marked where the water touched the island. We continuously added 1cm of water and marked it on the island until we reached the top of it.

The island was then used to make a topographic map.

Check out these pictures!

Science connecting classrooms project

Assalamu alaikum,

We have been celebrating Health and Hygiene Awareness Days from since February 27. These activities and competitions will end March 17 inshaAllah.

Our activities are linked with the iEARN initiated project of Mrs Afshan Rupsi, Beaconhouse School Systems, Middle PECHS, Karachi, Pakistan.

The 6th graders exchange ideas and communicate with Mrs Rupsi 7th and 8th grade classes via blogs and Skype.

Take a look at what we have done so far in this slideshow!

We are doing surveys, posters, films, various competitions (The Cleanest Class competition, The Best Hygiene Slogan, The best Health or Hygiene Poem) on the chosen theme "How to maintain hygiene around us".

School restarts Tuesday 13th March!

On Wednesday March 14th, afternoon, we will have a Health March. Everyone should come with appropriate clothing for a walk on the Corniche. Reminder, headscarves will stay on the heads!

Thursday March 15th inshaAllah, we will be doing a litter pick up in the area.

On Friday March 16th, all winners will be announced. Do not forget that the winners of The Cleanest Class competition will be awarded a pizza party!

Progress reports have started to go home. We apologize profusely for the lateness. All reports should be out by tomorrow evening inshaAllah!

Science news corner

Third graders learnt the butterfly life cycle last week.

We made our own playdough using flour, vegetable oil, salt, colouring and cream of tartar.
The students then shaped each stage of the butterfly's life.

The incredible edible cell

أسلم عليكم !

Last Thursday the sixth grade Science class attempted to construct an edible cell.

The class was divided into 3 groups. Each group was asked to choose a cell (plant or animal), and construct the cell parts with foods that were similiar structurally.

Well, we had amazing to ...interesting food choices.

The red jello represents an animal cell.

The orange jello represents a plant cell.

The best part about this lab work, is that the student got to eat their cells afterwards! They were so eager to eat their cells, that some of them started eating the cell parts before the cell was finished! (As a result, I took off a point off of their scores).

Take a look!

A bowl of thiere and then some...

Saturday's Kermesse was extraordinary according to the reviews of many 6th graders. I had a cold and was out resting but I was a little jealous after hearing the fun that everyone had that day. With the profits made, the Upper School will be receiving a new refrigerator (the old one konked out some while back from an electrical surcharge it would seem...), and the Lower School will be receiving a stove. (I have heard them talking about baking for their newly created Cooking Club, so this will indeed be an indispensable gadget).

Yesterday, most of us ate a copious bowl of thiere with the imaginable, unimaginable and sometimes 'Are you crazy?!' ingredients inside. "The night of thiere" is commonly known as Ashoura which corresponds to the 10th day of the month of Muharram. Muharram is the first month of the Muslim lunar calendar and also one of the 4 sacred months of the year. We pray that this year is prosperous for us all, and that we increase ourselves in eeman and piety.

Today, some of us had the opportunity to rest. But for the Abu Ubaydah 6th grade class, rest is necessary for the body, but the mind is always churning away, finding answers to the many questions asked by our teachers. Don't forget to do your homework and turn it in. Low homework notes has affected considerably students in not reaching Honour Roll this semester!

Again, we would like to remind you that Report Cards will be given this Friday. Please make the time to come to the school to receive them yourselves and speak with your child's teachers about any concerns.

Salaam!

First the Kermesse, then my homework...

سلم عليكم

Our first Kermesse will be tomorrow Saturday 3rd December inshaAllah. We encourage you to bring your family and enjoy this IQRA event that promises to be sensational. The students are excited already as they have been integrated enormously in the decoratings and coordonation of activities. Entrance tickets are 500fcfa. There will be on sale hotdogs and French fries at 500fcfa, juices and soft drinks as well as cakes and icecream. All proceeds will be kept by the Student Parents Association and reinvested in further school activities or  school needs.

Sixth graders: After having Kermessed yourself out, please be reminded that homework must be completed and returned on Monday in the following subjects:

Mathématiques: Il faut revoir les grands et petits numéros en français et en anglais. Toute la semaine prochaine, vous ferez des travaux diriges. Préparez vous en conséquence!

Deenyat: Avant de commencer le nouveau chapitre, faites une recherche sur les bienfaits d'Allah sur sa creation.

English: Don't forget your exercises on how to create new words from root words!
